When we imagine a Lily in our minds, we often see a pure white flower. Biblical images and stories tell us that the Lily of the Valley plant is a cascading ladder of petite white flowers that were created by the tears of Mary upon the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
The Lily of the Valley has a sweet smell and symbolizes the return of joy, purity, and humility of the Virgin Mary.
Therefore, it’s no wonder that there are references in the Bible to the Lily, such as:
Luke 12:27-28 – “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith!”
Consequently, Lily essential oil makes an anointing oil for many uses.*
Anointing oil, also referred to as blessing oil, is an act that turns standard oil into a powerful spiritual symbol and tool.* Based on your religious beliefs, have your own guidelines specifying how oil is blessed, who blesses it, and how it is used.
Olive oil is recommended as the oil of choice, due to its traditional, biblical significance. There is no requirement to obtain a special kind of olive oil. Extra-virgin, cold-pressed olive oil, available at most grocery stores, is sufficient for making anointing oil. Using certified organic olive oil is also a consideration.
Although you anoint and use pure olive oil, also add about 6 drops of Lily essential oil to an ounce of olive oil for a special remembrance of Jesus’ walk to his crucifixion. Many see a significance in the aroma of the Lily flower in bringing forth life to help those in need during difficult times.
