Aromatherapy For Headaches & Migraines

Headaches can come on when you least expect them. They can be from stress, not enough water or food, exhaustion, tension, medical issues, and so much more. Popping advil or ibuprofen isn’t a bad option, but not one that you want to be taking all the time. Using aromatherapy and essential oils is a great natural way to help alleviate headaches.

There are many essential oils that contribute to headache relief, some of the most common and effective being

  • Peppermint (pain-relieving effect, relaxes muscles, relieves tension)
  • Lavender (calming, relaxing, provides an analgesic effect)
  • Eucalyptus (cooling and deodorizing effect)
  • Rosewood (relieves nervous tension)

Topical Application

A great way to use aromatherapy and essential oils for relieving headaches is to do so topically. Be sure to dilute the essential oil blend with sweet almond oil or jojoba oil and massage onto forehead, neck, or temples. The essential oil scents will stay with you and help directly alleviate tension and headaches.

Add the essential oil blend to your diffuser and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Tissue Diffusion

Place 1 – 3 drops of the essential oil blend on a tissue, paper towel, or cotton ball. Place near your nose and inhale deeply. Repeat with several breaths.

Other Methods

Inhalation being one of the most effective and soothing way to use aromatherapy, there are a few other options for using a headache-relieving essential oil blend. Steam inhalation, a vaporizer, or even putting the essential oil into a warm bath will help relieve symptoms and also contribute to a sense of relaxation and well-being.
